WordPress is a content management system that allows you to create websites, blogs and even e-commerce sites. There are two versions of WordPress, hosted and self-hosted.
- Self-hosted WordPress allows you to download a version of the system and set it up on your own platform. With this option you have the ability to fully customize it, and add and install a variety of plugins and themes.
- Hosted WordPress allows you to enjoy many of the benefits of WordPress without having to install it yourself, find hosting, or manage backups and general maintenance of the site yourself. With a hosted site, WordPress updates everything for you and takes care of backups. All you have to worry about is keeping up with your own content.
You can use WordPress' free account to get started.
- The free version offers up to 3GB of space, a variety of free themes from which to choose, and an easy-to-use block editing feature. You can also add users to your WordPress instance, so this is a good option if you need to collaborate with others to create a site.
- WordPress does place ads on all free sites, and you are not allowed to sell any ads on your own website. There are options to upgrade to a paid plan to remove the ads and gain access to enhanced features.
