A citation management tool helps you keep track of and organize various references for a paper or project. It also helps you to quickly create citations for your resources in a selected format (APA, MLA, Turabian, etc.)
If you need to export content from RefWorks into Zotero do the following:
1) In RefWorks, select the Export option from the menu on the right.
2) Select which References to Include and choose the Bibliographic Software option and click Export References.
3) The exported file will open in a new browser window (you may need to disable your pop-up blocker to see the new window). Save the file to your computer by right clicking the page and selecting Save As or Save Page As depending on your browser. Name the file and make sure to save it with the txt extension.
4) Open Zotero and select File > Import and locate the file you saved in Step 3. Select Open. Click Next and Finish to complete the import. This should import your references into Zotero.
Following these steps will import all of your content into Zotero, but will not preserve the folder structure you had in RefWorks nor will it import any attachments. If you had folders in RefWorks you will have to create new folders and arrange your content within Zotero. Also, pdf and other attachments will need to be added into to Zotero manually.
If you would like to maintain your folder structure before importing into Zotero, you may do so by exporting each individual folder from within Refworks. For instructions on how to accomplish this, please watch the video.
