HIST 4460: North American Borderlands, 1500-1900

AIDHP was founded to recover and preserve rare Indigenous newspapers, photographs, and archival materials from across Native North America. The project seeks to increase access to historical Tribal documents to encourage accurate and responsible American Indian research.

This site provides an extensive digital collection of original photographs and documents about the Northwest Coast and Plateau Indian cultures, complemented by essays written by anthropologists, historians, and teachers about both particular tribes and cross-cultural topics.

This portal includes the Early Recognized Treaties with American Indian Nations; a biographical article of Charles J. Kappler; journal articles on various treaties and treaty analysis; nine articles on treaties before U.S. federal and state courts; and an article on the use of presidential vetoes on bills and resolutions related to Indian affairs between 1789 and 2000.

This project aims to develop a comprehensive searchable database of Carlisle Indian School resources. Beginning with the school records housed at the U.S. National Archives as part of the Bureau of Indian Affairs papers, materials that tell the story of the school and the many thousands of students who were sent there are being digitized.

The McCracken Research Library, at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, hosts several digital collections relating to Native Americans from the Great Plains.

Provides access to typescripts of interviews (1967 -1972) conducted with hundreds of Indians in Oklahoma regarding the histories and cultures of their respective nations and tribes.

Featured here is a selection of more than 65,000 digitized images and texts from the Newberry’s Edward E. Ayer Collection, one of the strongest collections on American Indians in the world.

Consists of documents, books, and articles relating to the many tribes in southwestern Oregon and northern California. Some of these nations include the Coos, Hupa, Karuk, Klamath, Modoc, Takelma, Shasta, Siuslaw, Cow Creek Band of Umpqua, Yahooskin, and Yurok nations.

Consists of a letterbook kept by Indian agents John Johnston and Benjamin Franklin Stickney; an English-to-Ottawa dictionary, likely written by Stickney; and a memorandum book kept by Johnston during his time at Fort Wayne, Indiana Territory.

This exhibition explores the contributions of those who labored in translating and printing works in the Algonquian family of native languages.

This collection documents vernacular literacy in the Cherokee language, social aspects of Christian religion and church organizations, dates and circumstances of death, funerary practices, and other topics relating to the history and culture of the Oklahoma Cherokee in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Provides access to Constitutions, Tribal Codes, and other legal documents. Tribal constitutions and codes are the heart of self-government for over 500 federally recognized tribes, and are the lifeblood of Indian sovereignty.

This collection currently includes the narrative reports of the commissioner of Indian affairs for 1871, 1872, 1874, 1875, and 1876, and three additional reports for 1871. It also includes a map of western reservations published with the 1875 report.

The digital holdings of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program contain more than 900 interviews with Native Americans including Seminoles, Cherokees, and Creeks.

A digital edition of handwritten documents by and about Samson Occom (1723-1792). Occom was a Mohegan Indian, Presbyterian minister and missionary, intertribal leader, public intellectual, and important Indian writer.

This Portal is a gateway to Plateau peoples' cultural materials held in multiple repositories. The materials in the Portal have been chosen and curated by tribal representatives.

The commissioners’ records include detailed notes of meetings as well as copies of correspondence, instructions, accounts, and miscellany.

Contains approximately 2,000 documents and images relating to the Native American population of the Southeastern United States, including letters, legal proceedings, military orders, financial papers, and archaeological images.
