Registering to Vote

Should I register in San Antonio or in my home state and county?

The TU 2020 Census and Voter Engagement Task Force recommends that you register in Bexar County if you spend most months of the year in San Antonio. This way, you can participate in local elections that directly impact the community you spend most your time in. otherwise, it's completely up to you! HOWEVER, if you don't have one of the required forms of photo ID or cannot get one by early voting or election day, consider registering or staying registered in your home county and voting absentee/by mail there.

Still unsure of where you should register to vote, due to COVID-19 changes and remote learning? Text VOTE to 762-ALL-VOTE (762-255-8683) for helpful guidance before you make your decision! Or go here: Student voting FAQs.

What do I do if I am already registered at home but want to switch my registration to Bexar County?

If you're already registered in another Texas county, just register to vote in Bexar County. The state will take care of cancelling your previous registration.

If you're registered in another state, check here to find out what you should do about your registration there, if anything.

How do I know if I am registered or not?

What is the deadline for me to register so I can vote in the next election?

The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming election depends on the state you are registered in.

To vote in the 2020 general election in Texas on November 3, you must be registered by October 5.

For other states, check registration deadlines here.

Should I register in person or online?

Texas doesn't have online voter registration. To register in Bexar County, you have 3 options:

  1. Fill out a pre-printed form and mail it to the Bexar County Elections Department, postmarked 30 days before the election (October 5, 2020). No stamp needed, and the form is already addressed for you.
  2. Fill out a pre-printed form in the presence of a volunteer deputy voter registrar. That person will be responsible for taking your form in person to the elections department.
  3. You can fill out a form online, but then you have to print it out, put it in an envelope, address and stamp it, and mail it to the elections office. Much more trouble!
